London School of Economics and Political Science
LSE has opened its latest landmark building to students, staff and alumni. The Centre Building, which has a £78m construction cost as part of an overall investment of £125m in developing the centre of LSE’s campus, was designed by internationally renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.
Situated at the heart of LSE’s campus, the 13-storey building is the largest building commissioned in LSE’s history. A bold and beautiful design, it is also the highest building on campus, offering spectacular views across London’s skyline and delivered by international consultancy and construction company Mace.
The Approach.
Southernsbroadstock used its knowledge and expertise to guide the project steering group to maximise opportunities for the University. It was vital that the design within each space supported both didactic and collaborative teaching and learning. Forming part of a 2-week exhibition on campus, students and staff were fully involved in the furniture selection process and were invited to view a variety of samples before placing an order.
The Solution.
It was essential that the furniture selection supported the functions of all the facilities within The Spark. Southernsbroadstock’s wealth of experience in educational settings and its ability to design and manufacture bespoke furniture delivered an innovative solution meeting the client’s brief. Coupled with its capacity to source products from multiple manufacturers and its use of a single point of contact through a dedicated project manager was fundamental for the success of the project.
“Southernsbroadstock has been able to add value by bringing together its understanding of higher education and its forward-thinking approach to learning environments of the future and how we operate as an institution. The team was approachable and imaginative, advising and leading the University team during furniture selection. Nothing was too much trouble and having access to products before making our decisions was invaluable. They provided multiple options meeting aesthetic expectations whilst being mindful of budget.”

The Challenges.
Working to a tight delivery programme within a challenging city centre environment, we successfully installed all 14 floors over a 4-week period – in time for their summer school opening. Southernsbroadstock worked closely with the University’s project management team to ensure the extensive range of products were scheduled and delivered on-time.
